Preventing UTIs
Because urinary tract infections often recur, here are some simple things you can do to reduce your risk of developing another infection:
- Drink at least eight to nine 8-ounce glasses of water a day to help flush any bacteria out of your urinary tract.
- Wear cotton-lined underwear, and avoid any clothing that is tight in the crotch area.
- Take showers instead of baths.
- Urinate at least every 4 to 6 hours throughout the day, and do not postpone or resist the urge to urinate.
- Clean your genital area before having sexual intercourse, and always urinate afterward to help flush out any bacteria that may be present.
- Try to avoid products which can irritate your genital area, such as douches, sprays, and deodorants.
- After urinating and/or having a bowel movement, wipe yourself with toilet paper from front to back to prevent bacteria found around the anus from entering the vagina or urethra.
- Seek treatment from your doctor or healthcare provider if you experience incontinence (urine leakage).

Does Cranberry Juice Prevent UTIs?
Some researchers have suggested drinking cranberry juice, which has certain properties that may slow down the growth of bacteria by acidifying your urine. However, you may need to drink large amounts of this juice to see some benefit. Vitamin C supplements may have a similar effect.
